To be human

Some days you run out the door
Breathe the world in with big gulps
Fix it all, feel it all
And go to bed with a smile in your heart

Some days you need earphones and hoods
You need to walk slowly, breathe deeply
Chew very carefully before you swallow
And go to bed in a little covered ball

Some nights you close your eyes
And your muscles relax in a glow of contentment
You feel the faint tingle of being proud of who you are
You feel the near physical embrace of ever present love

Some nights you close your eyes
Only to fling them open in mild panic and rapid emotions
You feel the giant ball of anxiety in your throat
You feel the fear of never being enough as it holds you close

To be human is to get up again and approach the blizzard
To be human is to face the gamble of light and dark days,
angel humans and human devils, golden fortune and rotten luck

To be human is to balance these things and persevere
To be human is to keep putting one foot in front of the other
and to push on in this glorious, grotesque confusion that is life

To be human is to learn, grow and make some progress
To be human is to get up again despite uncertainty
and that is often progress in itself

To be human is to keep moving with no true beacons or answers
To be human is to face this great abyss of possibility with bravery
Even though we know only one thing for certain – the end exists.
